Discussion Prompt #1

(Write your response to the prompt listed below)

Your text (p. 192-196) discusses the concepts of hill climbing and means-ends analysis. Read and study this section. A common goal for students is getting a “good” grade in a course. There are many different things that you can do to try to improve your grade. How do you select among them? When do your efforts to obtain good grades constitute hill climbing and when do they constitute means-ends analysis. Give me a personal example from your own experiences as a student.  Remember you are trying to equate your decision making processes with the information from this chapter.

Discussion Prompt #2

(Write your response to the prompt listed below)

A-M Prompt # 1 – Some languages assign grammatical genders to words that do not have inherent genders, and they appear to do so arbitrarily. So, for instance, the German word for key is masculine and the Spanish word for key is feminine. Boroditsky, Schmidt, and Phillips (2003) report that when asked to describe a key, German speakers are more likely to use words like hard and jagged, whereas Spanish speakers are more likely to use words like shiny and tiny. What does evidence like this say about the relationship between language and thought? Discuss some theories about the relationship between language and thought. Why does this occur in humans?

Also, locate two empirical journal articles (make sure you reference them using  APA style writing) that support or highlight your prompt answer. Then respond to three of your classmates posts. Do not use the journal article in prompt # 1 as one of your articles! Remember you must respond to at least one classmate that discussed the opposite prompt.

STEPS in the DISCUSSION POST Assignment Process:

1. Read the chapter concepts

2. Use your database training to assist you in finding peer-reviewed journal articles from our library to support the statements you want to make about the topic. READ THEM and find statements that support your point of view.

3. Create your initial response (200 words) using the peer-reviewed journal articles you found as support for your statement about the topic.

4. Make sure you use APA resources (found in the Files Folder in Canvas) to assist you in citing the peer-reviewed journal articles IN YOUR INITIAL RESPONSE and also after your response as APA references.
