Students are asked to examine a real world “deviant activity”(from a list provided:
Students should note that there are five topics (pairs of “deviant activities”) from which students are to choose one pair; these are as follows:
(1) Tobacco smoking versusillicit drug use
OR
(2) Graffiti versuscorporate crime
OR
(3) Pornography versussexual violence
OR
(4) Adultery versus homophobia
OR
(5) Terrorism versus state-sanctioned violence
(Note that initial discussions of these deviant activities can be found in Goode’s Deviant Behaviour [the set text] and/or Atkinson’s Shades of Deviance [a supplementary text]. and critically evaluate its social construction and social impacts, and recommend future approaches. Drawing on different perspectives in the social sciences, students will be required to interpret the activity and make recommendations as to whether or not the activity needs to be controlled/regulated or otherwise socially managed.
This assement includes examining an act of deviance, undertaking a review of the literature and preparing a written essay.
Students will need to find a combination of scholarly and popular/media sources relevant to the deviant activity selected/observed. All sources must be correctly cited in text and a correctly formatted reference list must be provided in Harvard style.
The project should follow an essay structure with an introduction, body and conclusion. Students are encouraged to use subheadings to assist in structuring their essays.
The introduction should introduce the act of deviance that will be examined and briefly set out for the reader the structure of the essay to come.
The body should follow a logical paragraph structure, critically evaluating the social construction and social impacts of the activity, before recommending how society should approach or manage the activity into the future. Different/competing arguments and responses should be considered, and students should critically evaluate positive and negative aspects or consequences of the potential responses. Students should support their arguments with reference to relevant evidence and literature.
The conclusion should provide a brief summary of the main arguments explored in the body of the essay.
