What is the origin of suffering?

All human beings encounter pain and suffering in life. This can present some difficult questions to organized religions.

On some level, all religions answer fundamental questions of human existence, including, “why are we here?” Pain and suffering complicate these basic questions of human existence, whether the religion is monotheistic, polytheistic, or atheistic.

Some people endure much more pain and suffering than others. Why is this so? What is the origin of suffering? Is evil external or internal? Does it have any meaning? How should we respond to it?

Even more difficult is the problem of moral evil: some people deliberately cause other people to suffer. Why? If there is meaning in the universe, and especially if the universe is ruled by a beneficent deity, how can this be?

Write an essay of 1,000 words that examines the basic positions of each of the five religious traditions considering these human questions

In your essay, address the following questions:

  • How does each religion respond to the problems of evil and suffering?
  • How are those responses similar?
  • In what ways do the responses differ?
  • What factors account for these differences?
  • Which way of addressing evil is the most similar to your own? What role does reason play in your personal understanding of evil? How does that overlap or contradict with the major religions’ uses of reason in explaining evil?

Use the following file naming convention: LastnameFirstInitial_M5_A1.doc. For example, if your name is John Smith, your document will be named SmithJ_M5_A1.doc.

Describe the pathology of the disorder with an emphasis on the abnormalities of nervous system structure and function

This paper will need to synthesize an overview of the major theories relating to the pathology of a disorder, as well as provide a detailed discussion of the etiology (causes) and clinical interventions, using research to support your analysis. Your topic will be Schizophrenia Disorder.

The emphasis of this paper will be on the neuroscience aspects of the disorder, to include the following:

· Explain the theories of etiology (causes) of the disorder with a focus on the neurobiology of the disorder.

· Explain associated factors in development of the disorder (genetic, environmental, familial, lifestyle).

· Describe the pathology of the disorder with an emphasis on the abnormalities of nervous system structure and function (brain structures, neural pathways, neurotransmitter/receptor systems), including any genetic and biochemical aspects.

· Give examples of treatment options including both drug (pharmacological) and non-drug (pharmacological treatments), with rationales for use of these treatments based on current understanding of the neurobiology of the disorder.

· Summarize diagnostic and research technologies employed in clinical diagnosis, clinical and behavioral health care, and basic science research.

Your references should include a minimum of six to eight peer-reviewed and/or scholarly sources, which provide evidence-based information regarding the biological and psychological features of the disorder and were published within the last five years. At least four of your references should be peer-reviewed publications of original research studies. To justify your assertions, provide in-text citations for all factual statements taken from your research, with corresponding references drawn from scholarly sources. All citations and sources are to be documented according to APA style and should support and enhance your analysis of the selected disorder. Sources may include review articles, original research articles, information from governmental agencies (e.g., National Institutes of Health, Centers for Disease Control, Food and Drug Administration, Drug Enforcement Administration) and/or professional societies (e.g., professional society position papers or clinical practice guidelines).

· Must be a minimum of 10 double-spaced pages in length (not including title and reference pages) and formatted according to APA style

What types of people do you think exemplify “cool”?

Analysis and Report – “The Science of Cool”

During this lesson, you’ve learned about the variety of research methodologies that a psychologist scientist may choose to use in answering a research question.  Now it’s your turn to think carefully and creatively through a research question and choose an appropriate method.

The research question:

What is the concept of “Cool”?  Can we identify people who are “cool”?  Are there benefits (or effects) to being a “cool” person (i.e. what might cool people be able to accomplish that others have more trouble with)?  Can you make someone cool?  (If so, how?)

Suppose you have the whole range of research techniques/methods at your disposal.  You also have all the time and money you might need to test out this question.  You do NOT have superpowers, though, so you’re still constrained by the laws of physics (no invisibility cloaks, super-hearing, or time travel please!).

Your task is the following:

Compare the experimental method with another method of your choosing (case study, naturalistic observation, survey, etc.). In your comparison, address the following questions in a 2-3 page paper (double-spaced, 1-inch margins, 12-point font):

  • How would you go about answering this research question for EACH research method?  Be specific and outline the exact procedure you’d use for each method.
  • Be sure to identify the following:  operational definition you’re using for the variables you identify, independent variable and dependent variable.
  • Identify at least ONE strength and ONE weakness for each of the two research methods.
  • Discuss the reliability and validity of the actual measurement tools you’d be using for each of the two methods.
  • Finally, discuss whether or not EACH research method would allow for you to make conclusions about causality between aspects of cool/being cool and certain behaviors.

Things to think about to get you started:

What’s your gut-level definition of this concept?

What types of people do you think exemplify “cool”?

What types of things do you think exhibit “cool”?

What are the key elements?  List as many ideas as you can… then choose the MOST IMPORTANT five(5).

Consider selecting ONE research method to help you define, measure and identify people who are cool.  Then, consider an experiment where you incorporate cool and “uncool” people as your research participants.

* Submit your 2-to-3-page write-up in the Assignments Tool, “Major Assignment – Research Design: Strengths and Limitations”.  Don’t worry about APA formatting for this assignment, but do make sure your writing is clear and well-organized.

Why is listening important in the workplace?

Communication Basics and Effective Listening

Communication can help your career in more ways than any other skill. Being able to verbalize your thoughts is essential; however, how one actively listens is vital.

In response, your manager has asked you to provide your coworkers with information to help them boost their listening skills.

Create a 10- to 15-slide presentation that answers the following questions:

Why is listening important?

How will you accommodate multiple cultures when communicating these issues to employees?

Assignment 2: Discussion—Communicating Policy Even When You Do Not Agree

BANKS Industries has experienced rapid expansion in the past several years. However, it appears that the HR department is just now catching up by revising policies and rapidly implementing changes. One of the new policies outlines the requirements of a new dress code, which is stricter and more formal than the previous requirements.

Using the module readings, the Argosy University online library resources, and the Internet, research the concepts of communication and change management. Then, based on the above scenario, respond to the following:

  • As a manager, what is your role when it comes to communicating policy changes to employees, especially when the policy is not one with which you necessarily agree (for example, policies regarding personal cell-phone use in the workplace)? As a manager, how would you communicate such policies?
  • How will you accommodate multiple cultures when communicating these issues to employees? As you prepare to address this question, take into consideration the following communication concepts: To be a successful cross-cultural communicator you must remember the following:
    • There are no universal gestures.
    • You should be sensitive to verbal and nonverbal communications or behaviors.
    • It is important to be open-minded to cultural views of others and their ways of communicating. For example, a frown could mean concentration in some cultures, whereas in other cultures, it is interpreted as anger or disappointment.

By Saturday, July 15, 2017, post your response to the appropriate Discussion Area. Through Monday, July 17, 2017, review and comment on at least two peers’ responses.

Write your initial response in 300–500 words. Your response should be thorough and address all components of the discussion question in detail, include citations of all sources, where needed, according to the APA Style, and demonstrate accurate spelling, grammar, and punctuation

Do the following when responding to your peers:

  • Read your peers’ answers.
  • Provide substantive comments by
    • contributing new, relevant information from course readings, Web sites, or other sources;
    • building on the remarks or questions of others; or
    • sharing practical examples of key concepts from your professional or personal experiences
  • Respond to feedback on your posting and provide feedback to other students on their ideas.
  • Make sure your writing
    • is clear, concise, and organized;
