Weekly Discussion 1

Z, T, or Chi-Square Test Study

Background

During this week you will identify a research question created in Week 1 that would be best answered by any of the following statistical tests: z test, t test for single sample, independent samples t test, repeated measures t test, or Chi-Square test. This discussion will help you work towards your “Week 3 Assignment 2.” If there are no research questions that fit any of these types of statistical analyses, decide on a new question before moving forward with the assignment.

Discussion Assignment Requirements

Initial Posting – In your initial posting for this assignment, include the following:

  • Identify an appropriate research question that would require the use of a z-, t-, or Chi-Square test to answer. Pick the question from the list created in Week 1 or identify a new question if there are no appropriate ones from Week 1.
  • Describe why this question is appropriate for the selected statistical test.
  • Identify the variables in this study and each of their attributes: discrete or continuous, quantitative or categorical, scale of measurement (nominal, ordinal, interval, or ratio), and independent or dependent.
  • Explain how the variables do or do not fit the qualifications for the selected statistical test.
  • Provide a written explanation for the null and alternative hypotheses.
  • Describe the types of errors that could occur.

Research Questions

1. How does the employees’ motivation affect the organization Productivity?

In this research, there are two main variables that are an independent variable which in this case are the motivational factors for employees which include favorable working environment, compensation strategy, business culture, and the management strategy. The dependent variable in this study is the organization productivity. The best effective scale for measuring these variables is an ordinal scale basically because some variables have more impacts than the others.

2. What are the factors that affect the patient’s reaction to treatment?

The variables in these case include the type of medication, the lifestyle of the patient and the degree of the effect of the health condition has affected the patient. These variables have a different effect on the patient’s reaction to treatment, the variables are categorical in nature. In this case, the most effective measurement scale is the ordinal scale as well (Celli, Decramer, Wedzicha, Wilson, Agustí, Criner & Vogelmeier, 2015).

3. Does the increase in gun ownership affect the crime level in the society?

This question has several variables that increase in criminal-related deaths, criminal activities, assault cases. A rational scale level of measurement can be used in this research because of the nature of these variables. The variables depict some categorical characteristics they have different degrees of impact on the dependent variable in the question.

4. How does the school environment affect the student performance?

The security level in the school, the type of rules and the consequences of going against the rules and the level of strictness of the teacher in the school are the main variables in the research question. The rules and regulations are can be grouped into some category as well as the level of strictness of the teachers another subordinate staff, in this case, the best scale of measurement to be used is the ordinal scale. The variables also have some categorical characteristics they are not numerical.

5. What is the probability that randomly selected teenager watches movie over three times in a week?

The possibility or the variables, in this case, is that the student watches three times, less, or even more in a week. In this case, the main scales of measurement will be internal level, this is basically because they can be quantified but the decimal or rather the zero point is not relevant to the study or rather is meaningless (Pratt, 2015).

6. Is there any relationship between the traffic congestion and the price of fuel?

The research questions in this have only one variable of interest which is the fuel prices which may or may not affect the traffic congestion. This is a question that is meant towards finding the if there is a relationship between the variables in the study. The level of measurement, in this case, is, therefore, an ordinal scale. The data, in this case, may have some continuous characteristics.

7. Is there any relationship between gender and student performance in statistics and science subjects?

The variables, in this case, will be the average performance of the students in the subjects of focus, they will be categorized according to their gender. These variables can actually be measured using the ratio level of measurements by some mathematical operations. In this case, an average will be calculated of both genders performance on the subjects being studied. The data in this study will depict some continuous characteristics.

8. How does the training frequency affect muscle growth for bodybuilders?

The variables, in this case, are time, the intensity of training and the diet. These are the three basic factors that affect muscle growth. These variables can be measured using some interval level of scale because they affect muscle growth differently in bodybuilders. This scale will be giving some difference in categories in the manner they affect the dependent variable here which is muscle growth. The data, in this case, will be analyzed mathematically and so will give some discrete results (Sahin, Serdar, Serteser, Unsal & Ozpinar, 2018).

9. What is the relationship between mortality rates and poverty level?

This research question is intended to establish the existence of any relationship between the mortality rates within a population and the poverty level of that population. The variables in these case will be poverty and death rate which will be measured using the ordinal level scale because it will be giving the degree to which these variables affect each other. The variables, in this case, will be having some continuous characteristics because they rise and fall at some level.

10. How does technological development impact learning in schools?

This research question has two directions, that is, the dependent variable may affect the independent in two ways either positively or negatively. The variables, in this case, will include the teaching techniques used by the teachers, the accessibility of the learning materials and so on this will have some positive impact on the learning processes. These variables will be measured using the ordinal level scale because they will be categorized and rated on the impact they have on the subject of study.

Online Success Assignment

Before completing this assignment, be sure to read the articles by Waschull (2005) and Roper (2007) provided in the Module/Week 1 Reading & Study folder. Your assignment must be 3–4 pages, not including the title page or the reference page, and include the articles on the reference page. This assignment will give you an introductory look at current APA format and research in Psychology and will help you plan for success in this course.

Part 1—Create a title page.

Create a title page using current APA format, and include the title of your paper, your name, your university affiliation, a running head, and page numbers.

Use the following pages of this document as a guide for what the style should look like for the pages of your document.

Part 2—Write a 3–4-page paper that addresses each of the following components.

What have you learned about factors related to success in online education from reading the articles by Waschull (2005) and Roper (2007)?

How can you specifically incorporate these factors related to online success in this course?

Roper (2007) indicated that students who were successful noted that they designated (in advance) specific times to read, complete assignments/quizzes, and interact with classmates. Using this as a foundation, develop a specific weekly plan that you can follow that details when you will complete the requirements of this course. Include each of the following in your plan:

Review the requirements outlined in the Syllabus and Course Schedule and write a weekly plan/timetable that designates times when you will read each module/week, when you will review/study, when you will complete discussion boards/assignments, and when you will complete quizzes.

Reflect on your roles and responsibilities to family, work, and life, and discuss how those will interact with the fulfillment of your plan outlined above. Describe your plan for designating time to this course considering those responsibilities.

Create a table that outlines a sample module/week and how you have designated time to your varying responsibilities.

NOTE: Be realistic in your planning, but also know that success in this course will require that you carve out and dedicate time to reading, studying, and completing quizzes and assignments.

Part 3—Create a page for references.

Create a reference page for the articles by Waschull (2005) and Roper (2007).

Use current APA format for the heading and style of the references.

Unit4Disc2

EVALUATING RESEARCH This Discussion should consist of roughly 300 words

As mentioned in the unit introduction, at the core of psychology in practice is the use of techniques, strategies, and best practices based on the highest-quality research available (APA, 2014). It is not enough to locate research related to your topic. The research must be relevant to your particular problem or situation and present valid findings that you may apply in the field.

For this discussion, respond to the following questions:

  • What 3 peer-reviewed articles did you find related to your research question? Give a short summary and provide the APA citation for each article.

  • How did you determine whether an article was relevant to your research question?

  • What strategies did you use to ensure the articles you located were worthy of use in psychology practice?

  • What criteria did you use to evaluate the authority, credibility, and scholarliness of the articles within the field of psychology?

If you did not consider these questions as you completed your research, go back and evaluate the articles you located. Use the tools listed in the resources for assistance. If you had any trouble evaluating research, use this discussion to receive support from your peers and instructor to work through your challenges.

ASSIGNMENT – PREPARATION

Choosing a research topic is not a trivial matter. While a great many topics in psychology may be of interest, when you put forth the time and effort to research and write on a topic, it is best to focus on one that will help you learn more about your specialization area.

In this study, you will further explore your interests and passions in psychology by reflecting on how you would use research as a practitioner, then:

  • Select an important topic relevant to your area of specialization in psychology.

  • Formulate a more specific research question.

This activity will lay the groundwork for the unit discussions and the remaining assignments in this course.

Complete the following:

  • Skim through the Select Topics page of the PSY5002 & PSY5005 Research Guide. Scroll down to the Suggested Specialization Topics section for topic ideas and select the ones that are most interesting to you and relevant to your specialization.

  • Review the Topics section in the APA Web site for supplementary ideas for topics relevant to your psychology vision and goals.

  • Review the Improve Your Topic page for additional explanation and resources to help you clarify the task of topic selection and locate articles.

  • Consider the following questions to explore further ideas if you have not found any inspiring topics in these resources:

    • Can you remember an experience in your personal or professional life that you did not understand or would like to explore further?

    • Have you read anything in a discussion post, your courseroom, a textbook, or a course reading that you wanted to learn more about?

    • Have you observed anything unusual or intriguing recently (on television, online, in the newspaper, or in your job) that piqued your curiosity?

  • Rank the ideas you came up with and select the most important topic to pursue during the course. Keep your list of unused topics for future courses. You will have many opportunities for research throughout your program.

Now that you have chosen a topic, your next step is to formulate a single clear, concise, and specific research question related to the topic. The question should not be so narrow that it is difficult to research, but if it is too broad or multifaceted your research task may seem endless.

Use the four Ws—who, what, where, and why—to think about how to define and narrow your area of inquiry:

  • Who: Define the population you are concerned with in terms such as age, ethnic background, special characteristics, or other factors.

  • What: Focus on a particular issue (such as violence, family issues, or poverty) the population facing.

  • Where: Determine a specific type of setting where the issue would be observed, or where an intervention would impact the target population. Private practice, clinic, school, or others?

  • Why: What could be possible benefits of this research?

As an example, if your topic is adolescent depression, your research question might be: “What biological factors are associated with adolescent depression?” Try to state your research question in a single sentence that you will answer in your research and writing.

After you formulate the research question, list the reasons why this question is important.

Craft a research question on the topic you selected in your first discussion question post. Then locate at least five articles from peer-reviewed journals that pertain to your question that will be us

Craft a research question on the topic you selected in your first discussion question post. Then locate at least five articles from peer-reviewed journals that pertain to your question that will be used to write the introduction section of your research proposal.

Submit these five citations in the form of an APA-style reference page. Under each citation, write one paragraph summarizing the main points of the article. As you read your articles, keep the following questions at hand; these will help you generate the information about each article.

  • What were the topic/research questions being investigated?
  • How was the study conducted (participants, materials, procedure, etc.)?
  • What did the results reveal?
  • How might these methodological considerations affect the research findings and the conclusions drawn from them?
  • How does this article fit in with your paper? How did it influence your own ideas about your paper?

Based on your reading of the literature, what do you expect to find?

Include a hypothesis and a title page for your submission.

Once you have found a suitable job posting, carefully review the requirements and note these for inclusion in your cover letter. Before you begin designing your cover letter, review the required readings, videos, and websites to help you determine how best to formulate it. Within the letter, you will address the person or title of the person that is listed as the contact for the job in the job posting. As you draft your cover letter, consider the elements within the job post and use your knowledge of personality theory to make yourself appear to be the best candidate for the job. Assess the various types of personality measurements that might be most effective in the position listed and mention how you might use these on the job. Once you have developed your letter, save it as a document and attach it to your discussion post. In the discussion post itself, copy and paste the link to the job posting for which you wrote your cover letter. Describe your experience(s) writing the cover letter including the ways in which you may have attempted to manipulate the reader to get the best response. Analyze and describe any ethical issues that could be associated with this process.

Supervising personnel is a major responsibility for human services administrators. Effective supervision can have a direct impact on the success of an organization. Every organization has a unique culture that can influence supervision of personnel. Organizational culture involves the values, principles, and standards that drive the collective behavior of an organization. Factors related to organizational culture may affect the strategies, models, and approaches a supervisor employs when supervising personnel. The link between organizational culture and supervision may affect matters such as employee satisfaction, motivation, and performance. Well-supervised employees are more likely to provide a high level of service to clients.

It is important for you as a potential human services administrator to understand the culture of organizations with which you are associated as well as the factors related to the organizational culture. For this Discussion, select an organization with which you are associated or one with which you are familiar. Review Chapter 9 of the Graphic Novel and think about the cultural considerations that Kerry would need to make as an administrator.

Post a brief description of the organization you selected. Describe specific characteristics of the organization’s culture. Then, based on the organization’s culture, explain factors that might influence how a human services administrator supervises personnel and volunteers to meet the needs of the population it serves.
