How would an MRI-style therapist approach the current presenting problem?

The Vargas family arrives to their 5th session together and on time. As a follow-up to the last session’s focus on the family structure, you decide to consider a strategic approach this week. To check in, you invite them to share any feedback from last week’s session. Bob reports that he apologized to Elizabeth for “mishandling the suspension thing” then complains that Elizabeth is still “holding a grudge.” He admits that he often does not understand why she gets so upset and that he wants her to be happy. Elizabeth acknowledges that the apology “is a start” and suggests that the reason Bob doesn’t understand is that he “doesn’t ever listen” to her. Bob tells Elizabeth that he listens, but gets frustrated because he doesn’t know how to “fix it.”

You notice Frank and Heidi sitting together, quietly looking at a book while their parents talk. You inquire about any noticeable changes made during the week. Both parents claim to have made an effort to avoid raising his/her voice and report being pleased with their conduct. When asked about the children, Elizabeth reports noticing improvement. Bob, however, expresses frustration with Frank’s constant need of redirection and numerous reminders to complete his chores. Bob also noted an increase in Heidi’s demands for attention.

Read “Topic 5: Vargas Family Case Study.” Write a 750-1,000-word paper in which you demonstrate how therapists apply Strategic Family Therapy theories to analyze the presenting problems and choose appropriate interventions.

Be sure to answer the following questions in your paper:

  1. How would Jay Haley or Chloe Madanes approach the current presenting problem? Identify and describe two interventions that he/she may use and why.
  2. How would an MRI-style therapist approach the current presenting problem? Identify and describe two interventions that would be used and why.
  3. How would a Milan-style therapist approach the current presenting problem? Identify and describe two interventions that would be used and why.

Analyze and describe the psychometric methodologies employed in the development and/or validation of the tests and/or assessment procedures

In this assignment you will choose TWO general topics of interest to you related to psychological assessment from the list below.

Topics

  • 1.) Infants and preschool-aged children
  • 2.) Children ages 5 through 12 years

Research five peer-reviewed articles in the Ashford University Library that were published within the last 15 years, including a minimum of one article for each of your three chosen topics. In your paper, begin with an introduction that describes the role of assessment in diagnosis and treatment. Using your researched articles, compare at least two psychological or educational tests and/or assessment procedures for each of the topics chosen. Analyze and describe the psychometric methodologies employed in the development and/or validation of the tests and/or assessment procedures associated with each of the three topics. Debate any relevant approaches to assessment of the constructs being evaluated by any tests and assessments you described. Include an analysis of any challenges related to assessing individuals from diverse social and cultural backgrounds for each of the three topics. Conclude by evaluating the ethical and professional issues that influence the interpretation of testing and assessment data. You may cite from your textbook to assist you in the development of your introduction and the conclusion of your paper; however, the textbook cannot count as one of the five required peer-reviewed articles.

Assignment 2: The Case Example

In this Module we learned about the three types of multiple murders: Serial, mass or spree murders. Choose one case of multiple murder (either serial, mass or spree). Research the case online (do not use Wikipedia as anything other than a jumping off point) and write a paper summarizing the case. Present this summary in the form of a 3-5-page paper which will be used as a supplemental reading in a class on criminal behavior.  In the paper:

· Provide a detailed description of the case and the type of multiple murder it signifies. Use at least three sources beyond your online notes and assigned textbook.

Please be sure to include a cover page and a reference page. The paper should be appropriately formatted and cited in accordance to APA standards.

The Final Essay Examination will cover the material we have studied in Modules 5 – 8. You will need to choose four of the six essay questions to answer. Each question requires a three to five paragraph (250 – 500 word) response, using the correct vocabulary related to the topic. Your answers need to be supported with information from the textbook or other appropriate sources such as peer-reviewed (professional) journal articles. Do NOT use wikipedia or other encyclopedias, dictionaries or online sources such as Ask.com. Be sure to us APA style citations to show where sources were used in your response. For sources other than the textbook, please list them as references at the end in APA format. For maximum points, make sure your work is written using your own words.

Latisha suggested that the atrocities were committed because the Germans had become unusually cruel, sadistic people with abnormal twisted personalities. Use your knowledge of the fundamental attribution error to highlight the weaknesses of Latisha’s reasoning and then propose an alternative explanation.
  4. Abraham Maslow suggested that “a person who is lacking food, love, and self-esteem would most likely hunger for food more strongly than anything else.” Conversely, the novelist Dostoyevski wrote, “without a firm idea of himself and the purpose of his life, man cannot live even if surrounded with bread.” What evidence from the field of psychology might support each statement.

He is quickly frustrated by challenging tasks and frequently becomes overly critical of others. Use the psychoanalytic, humanistic, and social-cognitive perspectives to give three contrasting explanations of Andy’s behavior.

Answer the following questions using the information you collected in your 3-day media watch. Your answers for questions 1-5 need to be complete sentences.

1. In your 3-day watch, did you observe more thin women than average-sized or heavy women? If so, what differences did you notice in the characters they played/products they sold?

2. Did you detect more average-sized men than heavy men? Were there more muscular men than average-sized or heavy men? If so, what differences did you notice in the characters they played/products they sold?

3. In your 3-day media watch, did you notice a relationship between types of shows and the types of bodies depicted? For example, were there more thin or muscular bodies depicted on programming aimed at young people (e.g., music television) as opposed to programming aimed at older viewers (e.g., television magazine shows)?

4. What effects do you believe the media (ads, television shows, movies, etc.) has on individuals in our society?

5. Some of today’s researchers contend that women are depicted in the popular media not only as being unrealistically thin, but also are more often depicted in a sexualized manner than men (that is, wearing “sexy” clothes, speaking in a suggestive manner, appearing to be undressed). Did you find this to be true in your 3-day watch? Do you think this is related to the emphasis on unrealistic body types?

In 250-500 words, analyze the various behavior patterns you have seen that could lead to anorexia or bulimia; as well as, listing some treatments available for those who suffer from eating disorders. Use the information collected in your 3-day media study, your textbook, and the GCU library to answer and support your claims.
