Assignment Context

From the perspective of a professional who has knowledge and expertise in child development, you have been invited to address an audience that includes parents as well as other professionals on a specific issue. Select one topic under early childhood, middle childhood, or adolescence as the focus of your paper and written presentation. Your textbook introduces various issues linked to biology and the environment, health, education, and cultural influences. Start exploring the material in the text that is relevant to your selected issue and then expand your research to include current secondary literature.

Your assignment is divided into two parts:

Part 1

Develop a 5–7-page paper on the selected topic supporting ideas with current research from the scholarly literature that fully explores the topic. The paper will provide the basis for you to explain the impact of the issue facing the child in the scenario you selected from the Scenarios media piece. The paper should have APA structure, formatting, and referencing.

Part 2

Prepare a 2-page presentation for the intended audience based on the research you conducted on the topic. Write out the presentation on two double-spaced pages. This does not need APA in-text referencing, but you can refer to important scholarly sources that support your ideas. Remember to consider the level of understanding the audience may have on the topic so that you avoid jargon or provide clarification. This presentation needs to have objective support, but, as a presentation, it can be in more informal first-person language.

Assignment Requirements

Your paper should meet the following requirements:

  • Written communication: Use the accepted form and style of the psychological professions, employing grammar, punctuation, and mechanics expected of graduate-level composition and expression.
  • References: Include a minimum of six academic, peer-reviewed resources. The course text can be used, but it is not considered one of the peer-reviewed articles.
  • APA style and formatting: Format the references and in-text citations according to current APA style and formatting guidelines. Use the MEAL Plan document (given in the resources) to organize the content and include APA headings and subheadings.
  • Length of paper: 5–7 typed, double-spaced pages.
  • Length of presentation paper: Two typed, double-spaced pages. Note: Your submission for this assignment should be a total of 7–9 pages that includes both Part 1 and Part 2.
  • Font and font size: Times New Roman, 12 point.

Note: Your instructor may use the Writing Feedback Tool to provide additional feedback on your writing.

This week you read about some important issues pertaining to the use of technology and social media and how this intersects with ethical issues in human service professions. For this week’s task, do the following:

First, revisit the Codes of Ethics you explored for your earlier “Exploring Careers and Ethical Guidelines” challenge assignment. Return to the links to the guidelines and review carefully to see if there are any guidelines specifically pertaining to (a) the use of technology (e.g. storing client files, etc) and (b) the use of social media or other similar technology (e.g. facebook, twitter, etc).

For each, copy/paste any passages that address guidelines about technology. Then, write a brief summary/reflection addressing why you believe the given guidelines are important given the area of work and also addressing any areas you think may be missing or could be strengthened. For instance, not all organizations have guidelines pertaining to social media yet, if this is the case for your chosen set of guidelines, suggest why it would be important and also make suggestions about how a guideline might read.

Finally, after you have completed the steps above, think about your own use of social media (or, your “social media footprint”). How do you use social media/the internet? What platforms do you use? Are there any changes or specific strategies/steps you may consider taking to make sure you are appropriate balancing your professional image/responsibilities online? Explain.

Please organize your work on this challenge assignment worksheet.

Assignment: Resume and Cover LetterThe primary purpose of the cover letter is to summarize your relevant experience and convey your interest and fit for the job. Ultimately, the cover letter is aimed at getting employers to look at your resume. The primary purpose of a resume is to persuade prospective employers to grant you an interview. For this Assignment, you will create a resume and cover letter. Review this week’s Learning Resources, as well as the following instructions before submitting your resume and cover letter.ResumesIt is important to always have a current working resume. As you accomplish tasks and acquire skills, you can always add to it. As employers read your resume, they will look for how your skills, knowledge, and abilities apply to the job in question. Thus, you must document your achievements in a way that will show their applicability to the job. Otherwise, you run the risk of potential employers rejecting your application because they do not see the connection between your achievements and the job. Before you write your resume: Know your qualifications. Have a clear indication of the skills that might be valuable to employers. Know as much as you can about the prospective employer’s job description and selection criteria. If you don’t have this information because you don’t have a specific job in a specific organization in mind, at least know as much as you can about the skills and aptitudes involved in the type of job you are looking for. Rank your qualifications in order of their importance to the job you desire. How to create your resume:Your resume should answer the following questions: What do I want from this job? This is answered in your career objectives. Why should you be considered for this job? This is answered in the educational history and work experience sections. There are hundreds (or thousands) of ways to put together a resume, so just consider these to be basic guidelines, and review the Learning Resources for examples. Review Table 4.3 in the Course Text for a list of resume preparation tips.Cover LettersShould a cover letter always accompany your resume? The jury is currently out on this question; different employers have different things to say about cover letters. For a professional job, it is best practice to always include a cover letter even if it doesn’t state to do so in the application directions. If you decide that a cover letter is necessary for a particular job, or if the employer specifically asks for one, consider these general guidelines: Your cover letter should not only introduce but also complement your resume. The letter should not tell too much about you personally; rather, it should highlight those aspects in your resume that pertain to the position for which you are applying. It should be as specific and as concise as possible. A cover letter should: Refer to the specific position for which you are applying. Briefly state how the position fits with your career objectives. Convey your interest in the position you want as well as your interest in and knowledge of the organization itself. Be designed to direct the employer to those points in your resume that relate to the position you want. Include a mailing address, telephone number, and e-mail address where you can be reached. The cover letter may be the single most important piece of information you share with employers, and it says a lot about your writing style: Is it organized? Does it make sense? Is it concise, or does it contain rambling language? When possible, ask someone to proofread your cover letter before sending it.Assignment:For this Assignment, create a 1-page cover letter and 1-page resume tailored to the job you posted about in this week’s Discussion. Use the examples in Chapter 4 for formatting ideas.Combine your resume and cover letter into one document before submitting to the link.Note: For information regarding how your Assignment will be evaluated, please review the grading rubric located in the Course Information area of the course.By Day 7Submit one document that contains both your cover letter and resume.Submission and Grading InformationTo submit your completed Assignment for review and grading, do the following: Please save your Assignment using the naming convention “WK2Assgn last name first initial.(extension)” as the name. Identifying Addiction Issues

As has been discussed previously, the DSM-5 saw substantial changes to the diagnoses associated with addiction. In fact, it could be argued that the new diagnostic structure in the substance-related and addiction section better serves the treatment process, as it focuses in functional impairments across domains, rather than specific quantities of use. As such, it also supports a more strength-based, wellness perspective, as the client’s overall health and individual experience are key aspects of diagnosis.

Such a focus is also the case with the commonly used screening and assessment tools. It is important for counselors to be well versed in the use of instruments, and to understand the strengths and limitations of each.

For this Discussion, after reviewing Chapter 7 of your text, you will select two assessment tools discussed on pages 300-302. Use the Walden Library to find at least one peer-reviewed article discussing the utilization and reliability for eachinstrument selected.

Post by Day 4 a brief description of the two assessment tools you selected and application. Then, describe one strength and one shortcoming of each, using specific examples to illustrate your points. Lastly, describe how the assessment tool might be used to support a provisional diagnosis of a substance-related or addictive disorder.
