Assignment #2: Research Paper

Topic: What is the auteur theory? How might the auteur theory be applied and/or critiqued in

terms of your chosen director? Your response may focus on issues of authorship, on narrative,

larger themes and/or uses of film style.

Worth: 35%

Word length: 1575 (essays may be 10% under or over the set word limit)

Due date: Week 9 – Friday 5thOctober, 11.00PM (submit via Learnonline)

Requirements:

• No American-born filmmakers. Your chosen auteur must be pre-approved by your

tutor prior to submission (this is the director you will also focus on for Assignment 3

– the Audio-Visual Essay).

• Your Research Paper must be grounded in the critical discussion of at least 2 films

by your chosen auteur. You must also meet the research requirement of engaging

with at least 5 relevant academic references to pass. Students may draw upon the

weekly E-readings and the Further Readings to conduct their research.

• Your response to the set topic is to be written up in the form of a short academic

essay that includes correct citation, an academic reference list and a filmography. It

must use the Harvard referencing system as required by UniSA (on the course site

under ‘Course Essentials’, see Referencing’ for a guide to the Harvard referencing

system).

• No essays will be accepted without references or the citation of specific page

numbers when quoting or paraphrasing from academic references in the body of

the text.

• You must include a Reference List and a Filmography that lists the film or any other

audio-visual materials used (again, on the course site under ‘Course Essentials’, see

‘Referencing’ for a guide to the Harvard referencing system with regard to what is

required for a reference list and a filmography).

• Academic references are defined as: scholarly books, scholarly book chapters or

peer-reviewed journal articles. The following do not count as appropriate academic

sources: DVD commentaries; newspaper articles; blog sites; Wikipedia; IMDB; film

and media examples; dictionary entries; online course notes; and lecture notes

from this or any other course. The above may be used but you must still use 5

relevant academic sources to pass.

Failing Grades: Essays that do not use correct citation, an academic reference list, filmography

and the Harvard referencing system, meet the research requirement of engaging with 5

academic sources or are more than 10% under or over the set word limit will not be deemed

eligible to pass.

Late Submissions: Late submissions will have marks deducted at 5% per day (including

weekends) and will be returned with no comments. Essays submitted more than 7 days late

will not be accepted and will receive an F2
