Janet is an active 50 year old runner and she has been running for almost all her life. She visited her local physician for chronic concern of joint pain. After several visits, the physician is unable to diagnose her because she is showing symptoms of several disorders of the joints – arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis and bursitis. What are some similarities and differences between these disorders?

There may be many contributing factors to Janet’s joint pain so the physician would need to advise her as to how to proceed. The running may have contributed to it but is has also been suggested that it is beneficial to run to prevent stiffening joints, etc. It may be that the location where Janet runs is not a good surface (maybe the road is rocky, uphill, etc.) It could also be due to her age because as we get older our joints tend to weaken and get stiffer. All of these factors need to be taken into consideration before an assessment and treatment plan can be made. There may be alternative forms of exercise that Janet can do instead of running that are just as beneficial.

In one city, a balloon with a volume of 6.0 L is filled with air at 101 kPa pressure. The balloon is then taken to a second city at a much higher altitude. At this second city, atmospheric pressure is only 91 kPa. If the temperature is the same in both places, what will be the new volume of the balloon?
