As a human services professional and agent of social change, you will undoubtedly encounter conflict. To be a leader in the helping professions, you must be able to effectively manage this conflict and use it to positively impact the lives of individuals. Because your reactions to difficult situations can influence how others perceive you, it is important for you to be aware of your conflict-handling skills, as well as other values and attitudes that contribute to effective leadership in this field.

This week, you explore the impact of conflict-handling skills on leadership roles and collaboration. You also examine attitudes and values characteristic of influential human services professionals and create a plan to support personal growth and development.

Discussion: Conflict-Handling

Conflict is often a part of change, and as a human services professional influencing change, knowing how you respond to conflict is essential. This self-awareness of your conflict-handling skills will help you better build your conflict response repertoire as you gain experiences in the field. By developing these skills, you may perform more effectively in leadership roles, resulting in improved outcomes for clients. For this Discussion, reflect on your own conflict-handling skills and how they might impact your role in human services.

With these thoughts in mind:

By Day 4

Post a brief description, based on your individual assessment, of your conflict-handling skills. Then, explain how your conflict-handling skills might help or hinder your performance in a current or potential leadership role. Finally, explain at least one way your conflict-handling skills might impact your collaboration skills.

How has this field advanced our understanding of human cognition and behavior?

Throughout the course, you have been exposed to theories in cognitive psychology and have been asked to use those theories to solve problems and evaluate human cognition. Based on what you have learned, discuss the role you think cognitive psychology plays in understanding human behavior and interactions. How has this field advanced our understanding of human cognition and behavior? How has cognitive psychology helped us to create socially responsible strategies for improving cognition? What directions do you think the field will take next, and how will that research be important in solving contemporary problems or real-world issues?

Discuss the clinical picture of substance abuse. Focus on co-morbidity in substance abuse disorders.

Prepare a 350- to 700-word summary of a disorder that typically co-occurs with Substance Abuse.

Write a 3-page (not counting title and reference pages) APA-style essay that includes the following:

  • An explanation of object relations theory that presents the major beliefs and assumptions as well as core principles and components of this approach. Include how this perspective explains human psychological development and key interventions/approaches used by therapists employing this approach. (Approximately ¾-page)
  • Discussion of how a therapist working from an object relations perspective would assess and view the issues and goals your client is struggling with and how the therapist would approach therapy within a relational framework. (Approximately 1-page)
  • A sample dialogue from an object relational focused session between you as the therapist and your client. Introduce this section of your essay by explaining what stage of treatment the client is in at this point and whether this is the beginning, middle, or end of this particular session. (Approximately ¾-page)
  • Concluding paragraph that summarizes your critical assessment of object relations as a theory of human psychological development and basis for treatment. Discuss what you feel is relevant and helpful, what you see as it’s limitations or risks, and how you would rate this approach in relation to strengths-based and culturally sensitive and trauma-informed practice.

What aspects of this theory do you find problematic in terms of your knowledge of social work practice? Explain.

Poverty has a strong influence on the lives of adults. When an adult lives in poverty, the effects extend beyond that individual to all those who depend on the adult. The problem of poverty in the life of an adult becomes a family or community problem, and few social problems are more impactful than poverty.

As a social worker, you are likely to address the needs of clients whose adverse circumstances are strongly influenced by poverty. Increasing your understanding of poverty and its influence will equip to you to better understand and assist your clients.

As you read this week’s resources, select the theory of poverty that most resonates with you to address in your Discussion post for this week.

Workplace stress can have long-term effects. · Role conflict: two or more incompatible demands at work or across work and non-work roles · Role ambiguity: vagueness or unclearness in role responsibilities and functions · Workload incompatibility: occurs when the amount of work to be accomplished exceeds the employee’s capabilities · Job insecurity: the feeling that the security of one’s job is unstable In addition, happiness and positivity can lead to personal success and further indicates the following ideas to increase one’s happiness: · Setting challenging and meaningful goals · Disputing negative thinking and deliberately practicing positive self-talk · Choosing to forgive others and let go of grudges and hard feelings · Counting one’s blessings and intentionally expressing gratitude for them · Visualizing future success · Practicing healthy habits such as a balanced diet, adequate sleep, and regular exercise Thus, hypothetically these suggestions and ideas can be applied to each of our lives. Whether you are working and going to school, or just going to school, they are applicable since school, too, is an organization.
